Two agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation will appear Tuesday in Hays for a presentation on cyber crime sponsored by Nex-Tech.
The event starts at 1 p.m. in the conference room at Whiskey Creek, 3203 Vine, and is expected to last about three hours. It is open to all who wish to attend, although registration is mandatory due to limited seating.
Addressing the audience will be Robin Smith, an agent with the Kansas field office in Garden City, and Cyber Crime Special Agent Scott Kice from Kansas City.
"We had some customers with issues that got the FBI involved," Nex-Tech Sales Supervisor Steve Riat said of how the event got started.
Riat said his company cultivated a relationship with Smith out of those incidents, and this special, free presentation for local residents and businesses was "the next step."
The two agents will begin by discussing common cyber threats, such as recent increased efforts to attack computer systems via social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, things to look for and steps to take if you have been scammed or intruded upon, and how to keep the chain of evidence intact "so they can properly prosecute the bad guys," Riat said.
A question-and-answer session will follow.
As of Thursday afternoon, about 50 openings remained for the presentation.
Registration can be completed by visiting www.nex-tech.com/fbi or by calling Tammy Wellbrock, direct sales account representative for Nex-Tech, at (877) 625-7872.
